Kayak Lake Thun, swim the Aare, shop the market, cook together
The Aare Explorer is Konrad's signature full day on the water — a four-part programme that takes you through every mode of the Aare from lake to river to kitchen. You start on touring kayaks on Lake Thun, cross to the Aare river for a swimming float, then move to the Thun weekly market for ingredients, and finish cooking together at his place.
The day runs 8 hours and is genuinely tiring in the best way — exercise, cold water, sun, and a proper home-cooked meal at the end. No experience required for any section.
Kayak launch — Lake Thun
Touring kayaks into the lake. Konrad leads the route along the north shore toward Spiez Bay. 2–3 hours of paddling with a rest in Oberhofen cove.
Transition to the Aare
Kayaks returned. Short drive to the Aare entry point above Thun. Wetsuits on.
Aare river swim — float to Uttigen
Into the river. The current takes you north. Konrad swims alongside. 90-minute float with stops on gravel banks.
Thun market — ingredient run
Dried off and in dry clothes. The Thun Saturday market (May–Oct) or the covered market otherwise. Konrad chooses what to cook based on what looks best.
Cook together
Konrad's kitchen or a rented outdoor space. He leads — you chop, stir and taste. Usually a market vegetable dish and grilled fish.
Eat and end
The meal is the finish line. No rush to leave.
The kayak route follows the castle coast along the north shore. Turquoise bays, medieval stonework above the waterline.
The best single-spot swim on the Aare: remote, wide, and almost always empty.
Held Saturday mornings in the old town square. One of the best regional food markets in the Berner Oberland.
