Spiez occupies a small headland on Lake Thun's southern shore, its medieval castle visible for miles around as a perfect postcard composition: castle tower, vineyard terraces, lake, and mountains behind. Spiez Castle, first documented in 1133, houses a collection of arms, furniture, and tapestries in a remarkably intact medieval state.
The Niesen mountain (2,362m), nicknamed the "Swiss pyramid" for its perfect triangular profile, rises directly behind Spiez and is accessible by the world's longest staircase (11,674 steps).
